Edmonton Screen is proud to announce Megan Shott as a recipient of our Elevation Program. Born and raised on Treaty 8 Territory, Megan is a Dene filmmaker whose voice is already making an impact in Edmonton’s film and TV industry. She recently wrapped production on her debut feature film, Last Stop Video Rentals, developed through Telefilm’s 2023 Talent to Watch Program.

About the film:

Last Stop Video Rentals is a nostalgic indie comedy set on one of the most anticipated release days of the ’90s: May 19, 1999, the premiere of Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace. The story follows Nick, a heartbroken college dropout who was forced to cover a shift at a struggling video store while navigating his own existential crisis. As the day unfolds, a crew of slacker coworkers, eccentric customers, and unexpected events push each character to confront their own paths and futures.

The film is a love letter to 90s video store culture, friendship, and the kind of chaotic growth that can only come from working a minimum-wage job and a misfit crew.

About Megan:

Megan Shott brings a grounded, community-focused perspective to her work as a producer. A NAIT alum with a background in social work and a deep commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices, she approaches filmmaking with both purpose and care. Her previous credits include Come Toward the Fire, an Indigenous-led celebration event filmed for CBC Gem special broadcast, and My Girl, a short film that screened internationally at the Māoriland Film Festival and Weengushk International Film Festival.

Megan’s recent work reflects a strong commitment to Edmonton’s screen industry and to telling stories that reflect the diversity and heart of the region. By choosing to film Last Stop Video Rentals in a real video store in Stony Plain and a local theatre in Edmonton, she’s kept the production local — directly supporting Alberta-based crews, talent, and vendors.

Set to premiere at this year’s Edmonton International Film Festival, Last Stop Video Rentals will screen on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at Landmark Cinemas City Centre. The premiere is officially sold out—the first film to sell out at this year’s festival. Due to high demand, EIFF has added an encore screening on Thursday, October 2 at 9:00 PM.

Congratulations, Megan! We can’t wait to see this story hit the screen.
