Portrait of Luke Azevedo

EDMONTON, AB, March 7, 2025 — Edmonton Screen is proud to announce Luke Azevedo as the organization’s next Chief Executive Officer, effective April 21, 2025.

“This is an incredible opportunity to elevate the creative economy in Edmonton and across the province,” said Azevedo. “I look forward to immersing myself in Edmonton’s creative industries and building on the remarkable talent that calls this city home.”

Azevedo will be vacating his role as Vice President, Creative Industries and Film Commissioner for Calgary Economic Development (CED) to join Edmonton Screen.

During his almost 18-year tenure with Calgary Economic Development, Azevedo spurred the growth of Alberta’s creative industries. He led the development and operation of the Calgary Film Centre, which at the time of its construction in 2016, was the only purpose-built sound stage in Calgary. He also played a key role in attracting HBO’s The Last of Us to the province, which contributed $182 million to Alberta’s GDP and created nearly 1,500 full-time jobs during the shooting of the first season. In 2023, Azevedo was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee medal for his leadership in Alberta’s creative industries.

“It’s been an honour to work with Calgary Economic Development over the past 17 years,” said Azevedo. “This transition will only strengthen the ties between our two cities. Together, we can grow Alberta’s creative industry into a pillar of economic and cultural development.”

Azevedo stressed that his first priority in his new role will be to connect with industry leaders, government and economic partners, post-secondary institutions and other organizations involved in Edmonton’s screen industries.

“The local community will continue to be the first and primary point of focus of Edmonton Screen,” said Azevedo.

Azevedo’s acceptance of the role is a ringing endorsement of the creative and economic potential within Edmonton’s film, television and interactive digital media industries, which in 2023 drove $18.3 million in production volume and supported more than 1,500 full-time jobs.

“Luke has long been a driving force behind the creative industries in Alberta, and we are thrilled to welcome him to Edmonton Screen,” said ESIO Board Chair, Peggy Garritty. “We are confident that Luke’s depth of experience and expertise will help us capitalize on the tremendous potential within the screen industries here in Edmonton.”
